Long thought to be a big fish in a little pond, a loan from his Los Angeles Galaxy to Everton has rebuked that theory. For years Donovan has dominated in Major League Soccer, but three separate attempts to succeed in Germany had been fruitless. At Everton, he slotted into a resurgent team and showed that his beloved running at defenders in the open field could be effective elsewhere. Donovan is comfortably the best player ever produced by the United States and its youth systems but has yet to elevate the U.S. national team to the next level.
Scouting thumbnail: Pacy, creative player who flourishes in space. Lacks the one-on-one moves to beat a defender consistently, but uses the ball intelligently and excels on the counter attack. Has improved his set-piece delivery.
After Todd Dunivant had been fouled by New England's Sainey Nyassi, Donovan sent a free kick into the box from the left flank and teammate and fellow forward Edson Buddle raced in to power a header into the back of the net. The stadium clock showed 5 minutes 2 seconds.Beckham, watching the game from the suite of Galaxy owner AEG along with AC Milan teammate and U.S. international Oguchi Onyewu, no doubt approved. It was pretty much one-way traffic after that as the Revolution found itself pinned back on defense for much of the first half. Coach Steve Nicol's team was outshot, 7-1, in the first 45 minutes and was fortunate to go into the locker room trailing by only one goal.Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena started a lineup that featured two players making their MLS debuts -- Brazilians Leonardo and Juninho. They were instantly at ease and looked as if they had been playing in the league for years. When Eddie Lewis suffered a bruised left foot and had to be replaced in the 26th minute, Arena gave a third Brazilian his league baptism, sending Alex Cazumba into the game and bringing the night's fashion note.Like Leonardo, Alex Cazumba -- he uses both names, just like compatriots Roberto Carlos and Gilberto Silva -- wore fluorescent yellow boots. He also wore his hair in corn rolls, tied off at the nape of the neck with white beads. All such trivia aside, the three players, all of whom are on loan from Sao Paulo FC of the Brazilian league, have not only given the Galaxy a promising new look but a younger, more dynamic one as well. The Galaxy should have doubled its lead in the 51st minute when Juninho danced past a defender and sent a cross into the area. Buddle got his head to the ball, but sent it over the crossbar, much to the relief of goalkeeper Preston Burpo.
